I think Changes (spotify) qualifies as one of Bowie’s most underrated songs.
Odd, almost anarchic chord progression that violates musical grammar? Check.
Introspective lyrics about artist reinvention while urging parents to let children be themselves? Check.
First song Bowie played saxophone on and final song he performed on stage before his death? Check.
I woke up today feeling like:
I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
And so the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
I used to resist change when I was younger. I used to think I could control the forces that shape the changes around me. I think there were many opportunities I missed because saying no is easier than saying yes. Now that I’m older (but not necessarily wiser), I’m getting more comfortable with changes that come my way. I think that the years that passed had trained that muscle to better adapt to life.
Pretty soon now you’re gonna get older
Time may change me
But I can’t trace time
Change is the only constant, they say. But time is a constant too and it’s steadily depleting. Don’t waste that time; embrace the change that is coming your way.
